We’ve reached the end of week three in the NFL. The only appropriate question is, “Who are you?”. Is the AFC Championship destined to roll through Buffalo? What’s wrong with Houston? Green Bay had already won the Lombardi, based on what everyone was saying after week 2.
The point is, we still know very little. Over the next two weeks, we will start to get some answers. What do we actually know? Injuries suck. Week 3 gave us the season losses of Nick Bosa, Najee Harris & James Conner. We’ve already seen five teams put their backup QBs on the field due to injuries.
Dallas has no D. Daniel Jones is on fire. Russell Wilson is atrocious, even when he’s good. The NFC West might be loaded? There’s a game in Dublin, Ireland, this weekend.
The Chargers haven’t played a game outside of their division, but they’re undefeated. Special Teams were indeed that on Sunday, with a Field Goal Block party all over the league. (Yes, I’m still pissed about the bad beat Jordan Davis meaningless TD after Philly blocked the last field goal and cost me a Rams +3.5 win… fall dammit!).
Aaron Glenn gave us the GIF of a lifetime, and then possible MVP Baker Mayfield made it even funnier, leading the Bucs to their third comeback victory after trailing in the final minute this season. By the way, nobody in the modern era of the NFL has ever done that.
Tampa looks like they are for real. They’re expecting to get Tristan Wirfs and Chris Godwin back this weekend. That will soften the blow of losing Mike Evans to yet another hamstring injury late in Sunday’s game. Evans shouldn’t be out long, and with Emeka Egbuka having an early inside edge on Offensive Rookie of the Year, the Bucs have an embarrassment of riches on offense. But as is the theme early in this NFL season, we’ll know way more about Tampa over the next 4 weeks. The Pewter Pirates host Philly, then travel to Seattle, host San Francisco, and travel to Detroit in their next four.
Indiana Jones, Jonathan Taylor, and the Colts could be for real. Two trips to Los Angeles and a visit to Pittsburgh over the next month might tell a different story. Daniel Jones is the perfect fit for the city of Indianapolis and for a team playing to honor the late Jim Irsay. It’s incredible how much better your career can be when you’re not playing quarterback in the state of New Jersey.
Nobody’s won the title yet. Nobody’s really out of it yet, either. Except for the Giants, Jets & Dolphins. Carson Wentz for comeback player of the year, and enough of these damn injuries already. Santa Clara is a long way away. The road to get there will take more twists and turns than a Mike McDaniel preser. Pace yourselves.
